Based in the lovely Suffolk market town of Beccles, the Choir history goes back over 150 years. We are a friendly amateur choir who enjoy singing and welcome new members without audition.
We perform two major concerts in the year, usually November and May, singing a wide variety of major choral works, supported by professional soloists and a professional orchestra as required. The breadth of our repertoire extends from oratorio to opera, and from Renaissance to Modern choral compositions. December is our locally famous, annual Family Christmas concert, with audience participation and supported by the Waveney Concert Band. Together with fun novelty pieces, this makes an enjoyable start to the Christmas celebrations.
We are delighted to have Geoff Lavery as our Musical Director. Geoff brings his expertise and good humour, guiding us to achieve our high standards. Geoff is supported by Carolyn Gibley, a highly skilled rehearsal pianist and occasional sectional tutor.
Typically, our performance venue is the magnificent St Michael the Archangel Church in Beccles. Every other year, we have sung at the Snape Maltings concert hall, merging with another local choir to sing larger, major works, and accompanied by a London orchestra. Recent performances have included Verdi’s ” Requiem” and Vaughan Williams’ magnificent ” Sea Symphony”. A performance of Elgar’s “Dream of Gerontius” is planned for May 2026.
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9.30 in Hungate United Reform Church, Beccles.
