As a registered charity, Beccles Choral Society recognises its duty of care to its members, volunteers and audiences and is committed to good governance in line with Charity Commission expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safeguarding is the process of protecting children and adults at risk from harm. Harm may arise from abuse (physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, or financial), neglect, discrimination, bullying or from failure to take reasonable steps to ensure safety. Although Beccles Choral Society\u2019s membership is restricted to adults aged 18 and over, children and adults at risk may attend concerts or social events and appropriate safeguards must be in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This policy sets out our general principles and practical measures to ensure children and adults at risk are protected and that concerns are handled appropriately and responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Scope<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This policy applies to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 All members of Beccles Choral Society (current requirement: members must be at least 18 years old; however, adults at risk may join), including trustees\/committee members<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Volunteers, freelance musical leaders, engaged performers and any external facilitators<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Engaged performers, such as soloists, musicians or orchestras, insofar as they include adults at risk<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 All events, rehearsals, concerts and social functions organised by Beccles Choral Society<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: Children and adults at risk may attend concerts or social events, e.g., as audience members. In such cases, responsibility for supervision rests with the parent, guardian or carer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Our Commitment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We aim to:<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Protect the welfare of all members, particularly adults at risk<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Prevent abuse, harassment or exploitation<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Promote a culture of openness, respect and accountability<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Recognise that vulnerability may arise temporarily due to the nature of an activity, not only from personal characteristics or circumstances<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Ensure safeguarding arrangements are proportionate to Beccles Choral Society\u2019s level of involvement with children and adults at risk<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Definitions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adult at Risk: An adult (18+) who may be unable to protect themselves from harm or exploitation due to physical, mental or other vulnerabilities, which may be temporary or situational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abuse can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Physical, emotional, psychological or sexual abuse<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Financial exploitation<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Neglect or discriminatory treatment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. <strong>Code of Conduct<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All those covered by this policy are expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Treat others with respect and courtesy<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Avoid behaviour that could cause harm or distress<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Report concerns or incidents promptly to the designated safeguarding officer (DSO)<br>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 Follow event planning and supervision guidance when interacting with adults at risk<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beccles Choral Society\u2019s DSO is the first point of contact for any safeguarding concerns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name: [Name] <br>Email: [Email]<br>Phone: [Phone Number]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DSO is responsible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Responding to safeguarding concerns promptly and appropriately<br>\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Maintaining confidential records of incidents<br>\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Liaising with statutory authorities if necessary<br>\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Escalating serious concerns, including potential criminal matters, to the police or local safeguarding authorities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <strong>Reporting Concerns and Escalation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any member or other person covered by this policy who witnesses or suspects abuse should report it immediately to the DSO. If the DSO is unavailable or involved in the concern, the matter should be reported to the Chair or another trustee\/committee member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concerns will be treated seriously, sensitively, and confidentially. The DSO and trustees will assess the concern and may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Contact the police where there is immediate danger or potential criminal activity<br>\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Notify the local adult safeguarding authority<br>\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Conduct an internal review where appropriate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beccles Choral Society will not tolerate retaliation against anyone reporting a concern in good faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emergency Contacts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Local Police: 101 (emergency: 999)<br>\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Suffolk County Council Adult Safeguarding: via Suffolk Adult Care Portal<br>(emergency Customer First: 0800 917 1109)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. <strong>Children and Adults at Risk in Audience or Social Settings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Beccles Choral Society primarily comprises adult members, children and adults at risk may attend concerts or social events. Beccles Choral Society does not assume supervisory responsibility for children or adults at risk attending its events. Responsibility for supervision rests with the parent, guardian or carer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Events should, where reasonably practicable, be planned with appropriate awareness of safeguarding considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members and others covered by this policy should act responsibly and report any safety or welfare concerns to the DSO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. <strong>DBS Checks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DBS checks will only be sought where legally required or where trustees determine that the nature of the activity makes this appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. <strong>\u00a0Trustee Oversight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trustees have ultimate responsibility for safeguarding. The trustees will review safeguarding arrangements annually and ensure this policy remains appropriate to Beccles Choral Society\u2019s activities. The trustees will ensure that appropriate records of safeguarding concerns and actions taken are maintained securely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0Confidentiality<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All personal information will be handled in accordance with UK data protection legislation.
