Code of Conduct

BECCLES CHORAL SOCIETY CODE OF CONDUCT (May 2026)

Beccles Choral Society (BCS) is composed of people of diverse ages and backgrounds who seek to celebrate the essential oneness of humanity through music and community-based interaction.  New members are encouraged to read this document prior to joining.  When you apply to join you are acknowledging that you understand and will abide by the terms of the Code of Conduct

MEMBERSHIP

1. Membership of the BCS is open to all.

2. Entry age is 18 years or older.  Younger members will be accepted if accompanied by a responsible adult or legal guardian at all times.

3. New members are not required to audition. 

4. Because of the works we perform, members should be able to read music.

BEHAVIOUR

5. Members will follow the directions of the Musical Director/Conductor and/or the Committee at all times.

6. Members are expected to attend all rehearsals whenever possible. 

7.  Members should inform their Part Representative and/or a member of the Committee if they are likely to be absent for more than two rehearsals.  If a member is absent for more than two rehearsals and they have not informed their Part Rep or  Committee, they may be contacted to discuss the reason(s) for non-attendance. 

8.  Members are expected to attend most rehearsals in order to be eligible to participate in the next concert.

9.   Members should make every effort to attend rehearsals on time.

10. During rehearsals members should not engage in conversations with other members other than asking the Musical Director/Conductor a question.

11. Members should provide emergency contact numbers and inform the Committee about any significant health issues that might arise during rehearsals or concerts.

12. Members should assist and support new members joining the choir.

13. Members should where possible help with the placement or removal of chairs and other tasks necessary for rehearsals and performances as directed by the choir’s Staging Manager. 

14. Members must be respectful and not make remarks of a personal, sexual, racist discriminatory, intimidating or otherwise offensive nature.   Should any member witness this sort of behavior, they should report this to a member of the Committee.    

DRESS CODE

15. Members must adhere to the dress code for each concert as advised by the Committee.

BREACHES AND DISPUTES

16. Any breach of or dispute about the Code of Conduct will be referred to the Committee who will endeavour to resolve matters and reach positive outcomes for all parties.

17. If any member is unhappy with decisions made by the Committee, that member has the right to lodge an appeal and a special Meeting will be scheduled to resolve matters and reach positive outcomes for all parties.
